Author Ann Swann has created the world of an 8th grade boy with sympathy and humor.While most 8th grade boys worry about being accepted by their peers, doing homework, the girl in their math class or sports, some have to worry about what is hiding in the shed.
Since this is a short story I will leave the book description at that. I don't want to spoil the story.
I enjoyed the story and it kept my interest from the first paragraph right through to the end. The style was good and the book flow well managed. There was enough back story to understand the character motivation, which can be difficult in a short story but handled well here. The only thing missing, for me, was sympathy with the creature which the story tried to elicit but just missed.

The story was creepy and fascinating all at the same time. It was a fun read. I would like more like this.
Another great one by Ann Swann. It keeps your attention from the first page. Definitely worth the read!! I can't wait for more from her!
The story is well-written, and Ann's descriptive writing has a way of always bringing you into the scene. From the smell of burning flesh, to a train whistle in the background, you remember the details long after you close the book--or in my case, turn off the . It's only .99 cents if you like a quick and fun read.
There's a blue zombie in 14-year-old Billy's shed - or is there? The excitement begins when Billy finds out what or who is in his shed and why it is there.
CHEMS is a short, fun tale that is perfect for middle-grade age and up. It holds your attention from the very first page to the last and has a unique, interesting plot. Ann Swann knows how to tell a story and has a beautiful writing style. I recommend this short story to everyone as well as Ann's novel The Phantom Pilot - another beautifully written novel for all ages.
I find it harder to write a review for a short because I don't want to give anything away, but this deserves its 5 stars.
Billy is an eighth-grader who thinks his imagination is getting to him, but he admits he hasn't got one. So when he finds the curled up body of what appears to be a zombie in his family's tool shed he knows it must be real.
The author's voice and the mystery kept me turning the pages. And as a person who normally doesn't read supernatural or paranormal stories, I assure you this short has a great twist. Also, just because the main character is a teen, don't think Swann holds back all gore. It's in there, and it's perfect!
I picked up CHEMS having no idea what the books was about. I started to read it and at first I thought OH god not another sparkly vampire, zombie ripoff! I was wrong. CHEMS is a fresh perspective, and one that i really enjoyed! Seriously thought about the direction that the author had taken and I thought "this would be a kick ass movie". I really got into the book. The idea is original and well thought out. Lots of suspense and if I had a complaint it was that the story was over before I was ready to stop reading! I really hope that this is the beginning of a series. This is a great idea, well written and i would love to read more about the CHEMS. Dont miss out on this story and the authors writing. You will not be disappointed if you pick it up. Seriously a great idea and I hope someone makes this into a movie. If you are the author and reading this...sequel please?
This is the first Zombie book I've ever ventured to read and I'm so glad I did! I absolutely loved ANN SWANN's writing style. In CHEMS, Ann Swann was able to convey humor, fear and gore in a short story that left me wanting for nothing.
The way Ms. Swann wrote the thoughts and dialog for an eighth-grade boy reminded me of Stephen King's writing style in his novel Christine. She was able to transport me seamlessly back to that time in my life with the boy's thoughts and feelings. They were absolutely spot on.
I fully intend to read more of Ms. Swann's work. I have highly recommended this book to family members and friends. Even if you are not a zombie person, you'll enjoy this read.
