Good plot, engaging writing, great character development. Elizabeth George doesn't disappoint. The contrast between Linley's relationship with Helen, and the relationship between Weaver and his lover is wonderful. So is the contrast between Havers' devotion to her mother, and Weaver's misguided relationship with his daughter, Elena.

For the Sake of Elena Inspector Lynley Mystery Elizabeth George 9780340831366 Books Reviews

Not as good as some of the previous Inspector Lynley books. I'm not at all against sex, but the author seems to have an obsession with it.
I'd hoped to find another Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers, but I don't think it's going to happen!
This is an unusually interesting book with many unusual and interesting characters. I'm usually pretty sharp about who done it but I sure didn't guess this one and I doubt if any reader will. My favorite, Havers, is in this one also which always adds to the enjoyment. As usual, it's a novel that contains a murder needing to be solved. Many twists and turns, many people telling lies, many difficult relationships that are interesting on their own. It is "dark" as are all Ms George's books but not quite as dark as some I've read. It's a very intriguing story that holds the interest to the end.
I enjoyed the book as the scene of the crime was at Cambridge. There was enough description to get the feeling that you were walking across campus and were part of the class. The plot was interesting with twists and turns. I enjoyed the back stories of Lynley and Helen and Deborah and St. John. I enjoyed the relationship growing with Haver and Lynley as well. It was a good book and I like it. This author varies the scenes but takes time to develop the characters along the way. Changes in lives happen and it adds to the murder investigation.
A book like this is as satisfying as beef stew on a Winter day. When Elena Weaver is murdered while running for exercise near her rooms at St. Stephens College, there are many possible killers - all of whom are as entertaining as characters on a television soap opera. It is possible to guess who might have done it, but it is much more fun to sit in your favorite chair and follow Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers in this fifth novel in their series as they navigate the treacherous waters of their private lives while at the same time they solve the case.
Finally. The crimes solved and some of the criminals punished. And then after all the deep emotions peak for Lynley and his love they come together. Such a nice and warm ending.
I had read all of Elizabeth George's "Inspector Linley" novels, starting years ago, so I decided to start back at the beginning and read them all again. Since the first reading was in the '90's, this reading is like all new material and I am enjoying them very much. I don't want to get to the end of the list!
This is my fifth Lynley book. They are all excellent but sometimes not an easy read. Characters are often dysfunctional and have disturbing behaviors. Still, I highly recommend these works.
