Review - VICKIE VAN HELSING
By Solomon J. Inkwell

It's hard not to compare a teenage girl slaying vampires with Buffy the Vampire Slayer because there are certainly plenty of those out there, but here the character of Vickie Van Helsing recognizes the comparison.

That's what makes this book a joy to read.

As much as Vickie is the star of the book, and only she can kill the Count, she isn't the only teen who gets the chance to slay a vamp. Every teenager has seen at least one vampire movie at one point in their lives, so when the real the ones show up they already know what to do to defend themselves.

When Vickie discovers she is the descendant of the original vampire slaying Van Helsing it was very hard to believe, but the truth quickly became real in the form of sharp fangs. For she would be the only one who could defeat the returning Dracula.

When I began reading this story, I was in the midst of working out a story of my own and one of the things that I was struggling with was what point of view and what whether it should be past or present tense.

Inkwell deals with the same problems in an interesting way. It isn't just a first person narrative, but one that takes place after the story is over and reads as if Vickie has gathered together everyone's series events so that she could talk about what she hadn't witnessed. In an interesting way, it pays respect to the way Bram Stoker collected together a series of people's diaries and news clippings to tell the original Dracula story.

Vickie Van Helsing is a light fun adventure.

On July 5th, a group of us chatted about the definition of horror on DarkMediaCity's weekly discussion. What is horror? How do you divide works into the subgenres? What are the subgenres? One important question we missed, probably due to lack of time, is the issue of comedy. How funny can something be before it's not horror and becomes comedy? Solomon J. Inkwell proves horror and humor make great companions in his campy Dracula-inspired novel Vickie Van Helsing.

Take a hefty dose of Buffy, insert a little Poppy Z. Brite goth and you have high school outcast Vickie and her horror fanatic friend Kyle Cooper. Life rolls on toward graduation until they find they have not only a vampire, but the vampire in their midst. Vickie also discovers she is not the average teen she thought she was as she explores the original diaries of Abraham Van Helsing, vampire-slayer. Life turns upside down for the pair as they uncover ancient secrets, ancient bloodlines and ancient fears.

I'm not sure the author intended it as a YA novel, but it definitely works best for the younger set. Although I'm only a few years out of high school, the teen angst and high school setting lost my attention in places. The characters were very well-written and Inkwell captures the trauma and fun of high school brilliantly. Teens will really identify with Vickie as she maneuvers around the Populars as she calls them. We all remember those kids! She's a great role-model character for girls as the powerful slayer and heir to an ancient bloodline!

The campy humor was great and reminds me of the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie. The wisecracks were funny without falling into nasty sarcasm and the campy action was paced very well. The allusions to the vampire classics were a nice touch and the ancient myths and legends were handled well. While not for the literary set, this is a fantastic YA novel.
Let me start by saying this NOT a shiny shimmery vampire novel. Oh no. The vampires are REAL SCARY vampires. The main characters, Vickie (who finds out she's the descendent of Abraham Van Helsing), her crush Rob, and her horror-geek friend Kyle are easy to get behind and cheer on at every turn as they battle THE Dracula and his newly created band of vampires. The story flows well and is very engaging, so engaging that I stayed up until 3AM one night to finish. I just couldn't stop.

Vickie Van Helsing is YA Horror with a great mix of snark and scary, lots of action, surprises, and interesting twists. The pace is lively and keeps you moving from one horror-filled situation to the next, and it's well balanced with some comedy and a little bit of romance. I loved Dracula in this book. He was so BAD, but you couldn't quite hate him.

This is an excellent debut novel--totally worth the read. I believe we'll be seeing a lot more of Solomon J. Inkwell and Vickie Van Helsing.

Ready for book 2 here.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, can't wait for the next one!!
You can tell that a lot of hard work and research has went into creating this story.
Outstanding job!!
I'm a fan of vampire stories - ANY vampire stories.. but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the original blood-sucker himself, Dracula. Well, Drac is back! Mr. Inkwell reintroduces Dracula into the 21st century with spectacular results. He doesn't sparkle, he hates garlic and crosses and he sizzles in sunlight, just as a vampire should. But there's something you don't know about Dracula and his history. Find out by reading this amazing book. Once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. The story is rich, the characters are real and there is enough action and suspense to keep you wanting more. A definite must-read!
