This is a well above average book on the eternal subject, which I nabbed after seeing one of the authors interviewed on a true crime show.

The target audience is pretty much "Why of course I already have a bunch of books on Jack the Ripper - doesn't everyone?"

While the accounts of the murders are detailed and well done, where the book really stands out is in all the various sidebar articles, maps, and illustrations. For me, anyway, the fascination is as much (or more) about the history of the East End than about the crimes alone. The book catalogs the history and eventual fate (as of about 2010) of all the significant buildings associated with the murders or the victims. Usually the fate was demolition, but there were some surprising survivals, and the authors have done a great job of tracking down mid to late 20th century photos of now-vanished sites.

It also has a bunch of computer-generated illustrations of the murder scenes. As other reviewers have noted, they made the editorial decision to make them all look dark and gloomy (as they would have when the murders took place), which is either annoying or not, depending on your attitude. If you're OK with the dark look, they are excellent.

The sidebars, maps, photos, and illustrations take up at least half the book and sort of overwhelm any sense of narrative flow, so it's definitely not the one book to buy on the subject. But well worth the very reasonable price if you're into the subject.

To quibble a bit, the book could have used more careful proofreading.

Jack the Ripper The Forgotten Victims Paul Begg John Bennett 9780300117202 Books Reviews

The star of the book is Jake's spell-binding artwork, but Paul Begg and John Bennett provide a concise and detailed account of the crimes along with tasty tit bits not seen in other books on the case. I have hundreds of books and journals on this case and if someone asked me what would be a good first Ripper book, I would definitely recommend this above almost all others. As a more lengthy and detailed follow-up, I'd recommend Paul Begg's JTR The Facts and any and all books by Stewart P. Evans.
Excellent book!!!...Had the usual information but also went into detail about many other people other books just touch on. Also the the CGI pictures had excellent detail and we're great to look at...next best thing to actually being there!
A great book with new details I never knew. The book was delivered to me as promised and on time at a great price.
This book is not only written well, but it is an excellent informational source about the Jack the Ripper Murders. Lots of Pics and Documents.
While this book doesn't offer anything new as far as Ripper information goes, the pictures and worth the price of admission. Its so nice to get a clear idea of what the areas looked like at the time, instead of having to rely on a few faded sketches produced by the authorities and others at the time of the crimes. Great book for any Ripperologist.
The book takes a close look at everything BUT the canonical Ripper victims, and for that the authors should be commended. A study of this work will, I hope, spark the interest of other researchers to continue the trend of looking in the darker corners of Ripperology to see what might turn up. I have most of the Ripper books that have come out in the last 126 years but in good conscience can recommend very few of them. The Forgotten Victims, however, is without question one of those precious few.
This was the Jack the Ripper book for which I've been waiting. Its purpose is straightforward to provide the clearest view possible of the crime scenes related to the Autumn of Terror. To this end, the authors relate succinctly all that is known about the movements of the victims and the interviewed witnesses. Although none of this information was new to me, it is very satisfying to have it summarized so effectively without added speculations and theories about the perpetrator.

This book adds something new and immensely useful, however, by providing detailed maps related to every murder (following the last hours of the victim and the positions of the witnesses), photographs of the settings as close in time to the events as possible, and dozens of newly created CGI renderings of what the crime scenes must have looked like on the nights of the killings. (Note The authors move beyond the canonical Macnaghten victims and give Emma Smith, Martha Tabram, Alice McKenzie, and Frances Coles equal treatment, with further discussions of other potentially related murders.)

As someone with very limited spatial orientation or imagination, I found these maps, photographs, and CGI artworks incredibly helpful in giving me a three-dimensional sense of the world inhabited by the victims and their neighbors as well as the challenges faced by those who attempted to solve the crimes. Visually speaking, it's the next best thing to walking in the footsteps of the contemporaries.

The only reason this welcome book doesn't receive five stars from me is that it badly needed a proofreader. A book this gorgeous and well crafted deserved the extra attention necessary to catch the random extra letters, missing letters, and spacing errors that jarred me out of the reading experience.
